In universities across the country, psychology is very frequently among the two or three most popular majors. The simple fact that you’re visiting our website shows that you think, like we do, that psychology is a fascinating topic to study.
With excellent psychology programs in our state and throughout the U.S., why should a student come to Georgia Tech to major in psychology? After all, isn’t Tech mostly an engineering school? These are reasonable questions but we think when you hear the answers you’ll agree that Georgia Tech is a wonderful choice for a psychology student.
To begin with, our School of Psychology has world famous professors doing research on the forefront of the science of psychology. We have people studying memory and motivation, aging and attention, emotions and robotics. The research runs the gamut from studying driver concentration in our driving simulator, to mapping brain function in our brain imaging center. If you’re interested in neuroscience you can learn about it here. If you’re interested in human interactions with robots you can learn about it here. If you’re interested in work stress or work motivation or intelligence or memory or emotion or teamwork, you can learn about it here. And you can learn about all these things from people creating the knowledge you’re learning.
When you learn psychology at Georgia Tech, you learn it in a hands on way. Of course we have lectures but we are particularly proud of the way we engage our students. Almost all of our majors are actively involved in research with faculty members. Many of our classes, more than what you will find at other institutions, have labs or recitations that accompany the lecture. All of our faculty welcome interaction with students. At Georgia Tech you won’t sit passively while someone tells you something. You’ll be engaged in learning and creating.
Finally, when you come to Georgia Tech you’ll get that unique Tech experience. Sure, Georgia Tech is a great technology institute. But it is so much more than that. It is a place of great science, of great mathematics, a place with outstanding philosophers and historians and artists. In short, it is a center for learning and discovery that is very hard to duplicate. When you come to Tech you’ll join an amazing group of students and professors, a group that creates a special educational experience. And, you’ll get that priceless Georgia Tech degree.
Because this is Georgia Tech, we’ll demand a lot from you as a psychology major. But because this is Georgia Tech you’ll get a rigorous and rewarding education, an education that will serve as a foundation for a lifetime of learning and doing.
